Gorky street, 11/3

Exhibition "FROM MONET TO MALEVICH. GREAT MODERNISTS" opens at the multimedia center "HANGAR".  The exhibition is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the death of Edgar Degas and includes the works of the sixteen most important representatives of the era of modernism - Piet Mondrian, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Paul Klee, Henri Roussot, Henri Toulouse-Lotrek, Gustav Klimt, Paul Signac, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent Van Gogh, Juan Gris, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. In total, about 1,000 works from more than 20 museums of the world will be shown.

The multimedia part of the exhibition is a journey into the world of art at the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX centuries, when culture and society experienced a real revolution. Every year it brought new achievements to everyday life - gramophones, cinemas, typewriters, electricity, airplanes, telephones, and X-rays. Along with the industrial revolution, the world was shaken by political upheavals and wars. Art reacted sharply to what was happening. It was then that artistic currents appeared, later united by the term “modernism” - expressionism, abstractionism, surrealism, suprematism, etc. At this time, the connections between reality and its depiction on canvas begin to break - from copying the outside world artists move on to creating their own worlds.

Pictures of modernists often contain riddles for a look, forcing him to wander as if through a maze and open source of meaning where tradition sees only chaos and nonsense. They easily gain a new life with the help of digital technologies - a hundred years ago, it was the creativity of the modernists that was the first glimpse of this technological future.
