Traditional Kyrgyz mat, chiy is made of reed grown in steppes, where they are collected and dried. The reed itself is strong and being weaved together with wool threads forms a durable mat.
The chiy mats are used differently. Chiy can be found inside the yurts as a layer of insulation which keeps dust away and allows the cool air to come in. Another kind called Ashkana chiy separates the yurt to a female part and the rest one.
They are also laid under thick felt carpets as protection from dampness and humidity. The chiy mats are also used as a forming press in shyrdak and ala-kyjiz making.
On this master-class we will learn how to make chiy mat, multi-functional natural mat of the nomads.
