    • Day 1

Issyk-Ata Hot Springs & Burana Tower

      Easy level difficulty

~ 1.5 hours hiking time (based on good fitness level)

We'll leave Bishkek from the Tenti Offices at 105 Isanova @ 8:00am. We'll head to the south-east of the city and the cool, towering mountains that have stood there for millennia. It is here in these mountains that we'll find our first stop of the day, the Issyk-Ata Hot Springs. The sanatorium at these hot springs was once a popular destination for people from all over the former U.S.S.R. These travelers believed that the water here had healing properties and would come to cure their ailments. Now, there are significantly fewer visitors from abroad but Bishkek residents still pack up the car or jump into a marshrutka for a weekend of relaxation away from the city. The decrepit Soviet era buildings and overgrown landscaping serves as a unique backdrop for photographs. As you explore the old resort, make sure you stop at the fountains for a small sip of the famous sulfur water. We'll walk to the furthest point of the sanatorium, where a rickety metal fence and twisted gateway mark the beginning of the trail to the Issyk-Ata waterfall. The walk through the valley is awe-inspiring with its beautiful alp-like mountain guiding your way. The well-worn trail turns into the hills on the left, eventually revealing a quaint waterfall. If it's summer (or you're feeling a little crazy) you can cool off in the chilly glacial melt. We'll take some time here to relax and appreciate our surroundings before returning to the resort area for a dip in the newer hot spring pools; a great way to rest after our hike! Once we've finished our time soaking in the water, we'll gather our things and get back in the car for our trip to Burana Tower. The lone minaret and museum provide a small but interesting insight to life in Kyrgyzstan during the Middle Ages. Climb to the top of the tower for a lovely view of Chui Valley. When we've finished exploring the site we'll return to Bishkek. End of Tour.
