The plot of “Troubadour” is borrowed from the play of the same name by the Spanish playwright A. G. Gutierrez, successfully staged in Madrid in 1836.
“Troubadour” – a drama of sharp contrasts, violent clashes, strong, romantically elevated feelings. Recreating the tragic fates of the opera’s characters and embodying their experiences, the composer paid great attention to showing the life background of the unfolding events. The colorful images of gypsies, monks, soldiers and the Count’s retainers, delineated in relief and memorable choruses, add variety to the opera and enliven the action.
The music of “Troubadour” is rich in beautiful, free-flowing melodies, close to folk tunes. It is no coincidence that many of them became widely known and loved by the people in Italy as revolutionary songs.
