“Carmen Suite” is a one-act ballet by choreographer Alberto Alonso, based on Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen (1875), orchestrated especially for this production by composer Rodion Shchedrin. The libretto of the ballet, based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel, was written by its director, Alberto Alonso. The storyline is based on the free, unrestrained and sacrificial love of the young soldier José, who has become a deserter and smuggler for the sake of the beautiful gypsy Carmen, who values her own freedom above all else. After falling in love with the Toreador, Carmen is killed by her lover, who stabs her in a fit of jealousy.
